A letter from John Welker

Hello,

My name is John Welker and I am running for Brunswick City Council from Ward 4. I have been a resident for 34 years. I have served on the Brunswick Civil Service Commission and the Medina County Board of Elections. I am a concerned citizen and want to serve as an advocate for the citizens of Ward 4.

Many of the Ward residents I have spoken with have indicated that they felt under represented by previous ward council people and thus out of touch with the city. It is my intent to rectify that situation upon my election.

I will serve my fellow residents as an advocate for Ward 4. I am not looking for a monument or an opportunity to run for higher office. I want to work with other council members to address issues that affect Ward 4 and ultimately the City of Brunswick. I will be accessible for my constituents and will help address their issues. I will be here for them!

I ask for your help in the race. Please vote for me. You can also volunteer to help the campaign and/or donate to the effort.

I am running for the Brunswick Ward 4 Council position so I can proudly serve you!

Biography

Was born in Youngstown where I grew up. Also lived in Saginaw Michigan for 4 years when my father was transferred there. My mother was a Registered Nurse and my father an Assistant District Manager with the Social Security Administration. Both were heavily involved in assisting people in need.

I attended Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown before heading off to Youngstown State University to earn my bachelor's degree. I received a BS/BA in Industrial Management with Minors in Accounting and Economics.  My career was spent in Materials Management where I was involved in Production and Inventory Management along with Purchasing. I was also certified with the American Production and Inventory Control Society and earned a Green Belt in 6-Sigma in Process Design.

My wife Barbara and I moved to Brunswick 34 years ago to pursue job offers. We chose Brunswick over Strongsville and others in Cuyahoga county. It offered us the type of community we wanted to set our roots in.  We will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary next year. We have no children but have enjoyed the company of several Golden Retrievers over the years.

I've had a love for being outdoors since my youth in Michigan, and enjoy the mountains and deserts while vacationing. Golf is an affliction as I am able to tell others what they are doing wrong but unable to do it myself. I delight in being more lucky than good as evidenced by my two holes in one. I also enjoy reading a variety of subject matter with a emphasis on history.

Civic Involvement

I became involved in local activities after I retired. I was appointed to the Brunswick Civil Service Commission by former Mayor Dale Strasser (R) in 2009 and served for 11 years. Civil Service promoted fair and open competition for jobs eliminating the spoils system. We tested employees and sat on employee-management disputes. This was a volunteer position.

I was appointed to the Medina County Board of Elections as a Democratic Member of the Board.

I also served on the Legislative Committee of the Ohio Association of Elections Officials until 2020. We assisted in conducting elections according to directions established by the Secretary of State.
